zombie monday

I'm exhausted from a fun-filled week.

I feel like I'm racing the clock everyday.

And I still haven't gotten anything done this past week!

And for your entertainment, here's a link to 2007's Top Ten NBA dunks, assists, plays, buzzer beaters, etc..

By the way, who wants to see Knocked Up with me?  It's been awhile since I've seen a funny movie.  Watch the trailer here!  It's hilarious  (looks better than the 40-year Old Virgin) and even has the makeup of a good old heartwarming rom-com.

This weekend was a lot of fun- especially with J and N in town and many weddings.  Still no pictures ready.  This is what happens when we have too much going on.

the veldt

Traveling just makes me want to travel more.

I want my own Veldt (a la Ray Bradbury).

I currently want to summon a white-sand, crystal blue ocean with a sun so warm and bright that I can finally stop looking so classroom-library-pale.

suburban slaves

I heard this story on NPR. It infuriates me. We celebrate Black History Month as a way to pay tribute to African Americans who have accomplished great things but also as a celebration of the fact that we live in a nation that outlaws slavery. And then we read news stories like this.

It's a story about foreign diplomats who come to the United States and bring servants (slaves would be a more fitting term) with them. The hard part to swallow is the difficulty that prosecutors face when trying to punish foreign diplomats. Most diplomats go free, even when the U.S. government has designated their servants as victims of human trafficking. It's called diplomatic immunity.

Be sure to read Part One AND Part Two.

workout

I was on the stationary bicycle earlier today at a friend's house to relieve some stress and just as I was starting to feel the burn in my thighs and was debating whether to quit, the monitor said "Warm Up Completed, Resistance Will Now Adjust to Target Heart Rate."

It was pretty discouraging.

My thighs ache. I did 150 reps of the hip abductor. Skinny thighs here I come!

stocks and mutual funds and insurance

The 416 point drop in the Dow yesterday really took a bite out of people's gains.  According to this article, right now may be a great time to buy.  Everybody's blaming it on China, but there were other factors at play as described in this article.

Only time will tell if there'll be a big correction in the next few days.  I've got my fingers crossed.

I went into AAA the other day to renew my car registration and they gave me a mini newsletter along with my receipt. This month's newsletter had an interesting section about the frequency of injury, collision and theft of different car models. 100 represents the average result and lower numbers indicate safer choices. Here are a few highlights:

Toyota Camry
Injury: 113
Collision: 91
Theft: 60

Honda Civic Hatchback
Injury: 143
Collision: 183
Theft: 236

Toyota 4Runner
Injury: 75
Collision: 75
Theft: 59

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 4WD
Injury: 158
Collision: 428
Theft: 548

Cadillac Escalade EXT 4dr
Injury: 84
Collision: 125
Theft: 1728

Haha. Awesome. No other car comes close to a 4-digit rating.

**I will say that I think the ratings are more representative of the drivers that the car model attracts as opposed to the actual safety of the car.

Hooray-- finally finished my taxes.  Now back to studying Bergery's Manual of Determinative Bacteriology.
